Walkathon 2010

Aim:
Pupils will show an understanding of:

  • Making estimations/measurements of length & area
  • What is average speed
  • Calculating average speed using formula

Activity:
Plan a walkathon route based on your findings about the school population’s average walking speed using Google Docs and Maps.

Task 1: ‘How fast do you walk?’
Get into groups of 5 for is activity.

1. Without actual measurement, who do you think walks the fastest in your group? Do you think you walk faster by taking bigger (but slower) steps or smaller (but faster) steps?

2. Using the corridor or open space outside your classroom, measure the time taken twice for everyone in your group to walk a distance of 15 m. You should walk the way you would in a walkathon. Fill up the columns, Name, Time1 and Time2 below:
Name
Time1/s
Time2/s
Average Time/s
Average Speed/m/s

While you are waiting for your turn to do the above, using the datalogger, walk the same distance to measure the time. Save the data about your walking, as captured by the datalogger. You will use this information in another lesson.

3. Using the spreadsheet from Google Docs (http://docs.google.com/), calculate Average Time and Average Speed.

4. By collaborating with the rest of the class, calculate the average walking speed of your whole class in the Google Docs spreadsheet. Do you think this will be similar to the whole school’s average walking speed? How could you make the calculation represent the whole school’s average walking speed more closely?

Task 2: Planning with Google Maps
Go to
http://maps.google.com/

1. Using Google Maps, locate the position of your school.

2. Using the feature “Get Directions” and “Walking”, find a suitable route for a 10 km walkathon from your school to an open area as the ending point. You should consider the following while planning your route:
a) Traffic conditions of the roads used.
b)Route should not have too many turns.
c) Big enough area of the end point for the whole school population. Make personal measurements of the average area you will need to feel comfortable after a strenuous exercise. Multiply by the population of your school to find out how big an area is needed. Use Google Maps creatively to estimate the area of the end point to check for suitability.(Show all your calculations clearly on Google Docs.)
d) Available space to set up a 5 km mark water point.
Finally, use the satellite mode to confirm the overall possibility of the route chosen. Place the image of your chosen route as part of your answer.

3. Using the average walking speed of your class, calculate how long it will take to complete the entire walkathon. Is it different from the time taken provided by Google Maps? Why do you think they are different/same? If they are different, which one do you think you should use, and why?

4. Why do you think it is important to estimate the time taken for the whole walkathon? Is there any other necessary planning for the walkathon?
